2023 Banister Fletcher Lecture

We are delighted to announce that Cllr Georgia Gould, Chair of London Councils and Leader of Camden Council will be giving the 2023 Banister Fletcher Lecture.

Cllr Gould will draw on London’s history and her experience working alongside London’s communities to set out a vision for our city’s place in the UK and in the world. She will warn that going on as we are risks a hollowed out city and inequality that threatens our cohesion. Building on London’s response to the cost of living crisis and Covid-19, Cllr Gould will set out how democratic renewal, a new era of collaboration, social solidarity and collective imagination will help London meet its potential as a net zero city where everyone has a stake in economic growth.

Cllr Gould has earned a formidable reputation as an innovator in local government and an original thinker about the future of the capital. Speaking earlier this year, Georgia called for a new era of “municipal imagination” across the city to transform and humanise the delivery of services amid recurring crises, drawing on lessons learned during the pandemic.

The Banister Fletcher Lecture is FREE to fully paid up members and open to non-members.

…..
Sir Banister Flight Fletcher (15 February 1866, London – 17 August 1953) was an English architect and architectural historian, who with his father wrote the first edition of A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method, (for the student, craftsman and amateur) which went on to became the standard reference for architects, with updated editions published throughout the 20th century.

“..the whole point of Banister Fletcher is that it does cram everything into a single volume. It will remain one of the most thumbed tomes in Building Design’s office library…above all, gloriously and frustratingly, invaluable.” (Building Design, October 1996)

Fletcher bequest that The London Society hold an annual lecture in his name.
