The Society has been granted special access to a curator-led tour of the new Drawing Room Gallery in Bermondsey, as well as a guided visit of the surrounding Tannery mixed-use development by Coffey Architects.
Set up in 2002 by curators Mary Doyle, Kate Macfarlane and Katharine Stout, the Drawing Room has a long history of showcasing artists of international standing as well as emerging promise. Visitors will get a chance to explore the latest exhibition – The Time of Our Lives – which focuses on the pioneering drawing practices of women artists and their impact on feminist activism from the 1980s until today, including Venice Golden Lion winner Sonia Boyce, Claudette Johnson and Sutapa Biswas.
Once a centre for the tannery trade which defined Bermondsey in the 19th century, The Tannery at Rich Industrial Estate in London now comprises a community of new homes of mixed tenure, a hub for local and longstanding creative charities and Southwark Studios, and individual artist studios.
