The Outernet London is a new entertainment hub on Charing Cross Road that provides two state of the art live music venues and an array of free visual digital experiences using LED technology. Designed by architects Orms and constructed at the junction with Denmark Street, which has for decades been London’s own Tin Pan Alley, it aspires to renewing this famous creative quarter without sacrificing its historic charm.
In line with Camden Council’s planning condition requiring the retail units to be retained for music-related uses, Denmark Street’s famous guitar and other musical instrument shops have been preserved and augmented, and a pro bono recording studio is being built there.
The foundations of the gold-coloured NOW building, whose exterior surfaces serve as screens for spectacular light displays and promotions, straddle the Elizabeth Line tunnel above which the 2,000 capacity HERE venue – the largest to open in the capital since the 1940s – has been created as a ‘box within a box’ to prevent sound from the trains seeping in. The smaller grassroots venue named The Lower Third after an early band led by David Bowie is also in operation.
The Outernet development, 13 years in the making, also includes offices, restaurants and a hotel, all right next door to Centre Point.
