IN PERSON | Car Wars: the trials and tribulations of developing London’s suburban car parks

There’s no question that London isn’t currently delivering enough homes to meet spiralling demand. With some of the most contested real estate in the world, it’s inevitable that compromises need to be made in order to build the homes our city needs. Brownfield land close to stations seems a good place to start: reducing reliance on car ownership and promoting active means of travel.

Reducing car dependency by converting car parks into homes seems like an obvious solution. Yet the Mayor of London is struggling to secure planning for suburban development, accused of waging a “war on the suburbs” by opponents, who claim that suburban car parks provide a vital service for commuters and visitors heading into town from outlying areas.

Something has to give…but what?

The discussion will hear from
Helen Jenkins, Lime Tranport; Anya Martin, PricedOut; and Rob White of Hands Off Finchley Central who come from both sides of the debate: who believe that it’s time to relinquish our dependency on cars in outer London, and who consider them vital to the city’s economy. Chaired by Russell Curtis, RCKa.
