How do architects shape London over time? Join Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands for an evening exploring the philosophy, pressures and possibilities behind three decades of city-making.
Since 1986, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands has helped shape some of London’s most recognisable districts, from long-term work on the South Bank to placemaking in the West End and new communities to the east. Their guiding idea, the “Architecture of Time”, has grown from a 35-year partnership with South Bank communities.
At its heart is a belief that cities are not finished objects. They evolve the same way as buildings should, echoing Stewart Brand’s aphorism: “A building is not something you finish. A building is something you start..” Adaptable design, shaped by the people who use it, creates places with character and resilience. This approach speaks directly to London’s ongoing challenges: growth, housing delivery, infrastructure, retrofit and the stewardship of historic neighbourhoods.
This Meet the Architects session will offer a visual and candid introduction to the practice’s work and thinking.
Led by directors Sasha Birksted and Alan Stewart, the evening will explore:
- The evolution of LDS’s work on the South Bank and what long-term engagement really means
- Placemaking in complex central London locations
- Creating new neighbourhoods in east London
- The real-world constraints architects face today, from viability and planning to sustainability and community trust
- How thoughtful design can respond to these pressures while building enduring civic value
