Radical Retention | From The Quarter To The Mortar | The Story of 15 Norton Folgate
How do we honour the past, while shaping the future?
‘Architects rarely begin with a blank canvas. We build on what exists. But to elevate architecture beyond the fundamental, we must revel in the details, understand the environmental, social, and cultural value embedded in the existing – and then breath new life into it.
At 15 Norton Folgate, we began with a simple, but radical, question: “can we keep it?”. Navigating the tension between city-scale economics and conservation sensitivities, it is a living, breathing demonstration of architecture’s capacity to adapt and revive the existing, for the needs of today.
Our latest exhibition tells the story of transformation – driven by a radical philosophy of working with what exists, and steered by critical decision-making across scales – from city to detail, and the interplay between modern architecture and historic conservation.’
