TALK | 2019 Saturday Morning Planning School – The 1990s

How did we get here today?

This year’s Planning School sheds light on the city’s last fifty years of urban development. How did we get to where we are today, and what do we owe these various eras? Each week, we’ll explore a decade – its policies, its battles, its formative projects – from the mouths of those who know them best.

Fred Manson on the 1990s – Bluewater, the British Library and the Millenium Dome arrived with fanfare, while the creeping gentrification of Hoxton Square pointed to more profound changes in the air.

Fred Manson was London Borough of Southwark Director of Regeneration and Environment from 1994-2001, with responsibility for economic development, planning, property management, environmental management, regeneration, leisure and community services.  He established Southwark as a leading agent of regeneration initiating projects such as Elephant and Castle, and Canada Water regeneration. He has done some of London’s most significant projects, such as Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge and Greater London Authority headquarters. Fred is currently Associate Director of Heatherwick studio.

Join The London Society for this informative series of Saturday morning talks with some of London’s leading experts and discover how the system works and what planners try to achieve.
