Lee Jackson’s new book Palaces of Pleasure (Yale University Press, 2019) charts the rise of nineteenth century mass entertainment, from music halls, gin palaces and dancing saloons to pleasure gardens, exhibition grounds (such as Alexandra Palace, Earls Court and White City), seaside resorts and even professional football. Queen Victoria’s subjects were amused: come and discover how the Victorians invented a world of modern leisure.
