Come and explore The Harrison, a striking example of how an awkward old building can be brought back into use in a way that feels both exciting and sustainable.
Built in the 1850s as a furniture warehouse, The Harrison is a Grade II listed building on Curtain Road in the heart of Shoreditch. Over the years, it had been altered and added to in a rather haphazard way. What could easily have become a jumble has instead been turned into a 40,000 sq ft mix of offices, shared spaces, and event areas – all stitched together with terraces that open up to the city.
Inside, the building celebrates its history while adding playful modern touches – think pink staircases, exposed brickwork, reclaimed timber and bespoke fittings. The result is full of character, showing how old spaces can be adapted for today’s needs without losing their soul.
The Harrison also shows how re-use can be good for the planet. As part of the Aviva Climate Transition Fund, it has achieved top ratings for energy performance and sustainability, proving that keeping and adapting old buildings can deliver the same – or better – results than starting from scratch.
Led by architects ANOMALY and Petr Esposito, the project demonstrates how imagination, care, and commitment to sustainability can transform one of London’s trickiest buildings into a place full of life and purpose again.
