This session, led by award-winning urban design and public realm specialists Publica, delves into the complex dynamics of the City of London’s public spaces.
With over a decade of experience shaping the Square Mile – from developing original Area Strategies and the Call for Planning Ideas framework to crafting the Eastern City Cluster’s Public Realm Vision – Publica is uniquely placed to guide this exploration of how the City works, breathes and transforms through its public spaces.
Through a detailed presentation, attendees will gain an insider’s view of how these spaces have evolved in recent years and where they might be headed next. From alleyways to modern plazas, discover how planning decisions reflect wider societal shifts, commercial pressures and the ever-changing needs of those who live, work and visit the City.
The session then moves out into the streets. In a guided walking tour, participants will observe key public realm interventions first-hand; invited not only to look but to respond. What works? What doesn’t? Whose voices are being heard and whose are missing? This participatory element offers a rare insight into the methodologies of urban planning, while also encouraging open discussion about how the City can better serve its many communities.
