V-TOUR | London & the Transatlantic Slave Trade

**Bookings have now closed for this event**

Join Blue Badge Tourist Guide, Dominic Burris-North on this thought-provoking short online tour that aims to shine a light on London’s hidden past and will invite you to reconsider the legacy of slavery and whether or not enough has been done or is being done to acknowledge it.

In the 18th century Britain became a major player in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and London, as its capital, was critical to both its development and propagation. On this talk we’ll explore and uncover some of the forgotten history about London’s involvement in what the UN has called the largest forced migration of people in history.

Dominic will explain how royals, aristocrats, merchants and officials funded and profited from the trade and brutal exploitation of enslaved Africans. The darker origins of some of the city’s best known institutions will also be revealed.

You will go on a virtual tour through the lanes and alleys of the metropolis to see where human beings were bartered for over a cup of coffee, and hear about how the ‘white gold’ used to sweeten that coffee became the principle driver of the trade.

What is the connection between slavery and the man who made the Crown Jewels? And who was the formerly enslaved African and key slave trade abolitionist that wrote a bestselling memoir and went on an expedition to the Arctic in search of a new northern route to India? This and more will be revealed on the tour.
