WALK | Sculpture Wars – London’s Monumental Bust-Ups

**This event is now closed for booking**

Are today’s “statue wars” simply a reflection of modern identity politics, or does controversy over statues and monuments have much deeper roots?

This London Society guided walk will focus on the debate currently surrounding the city’s memorials. Conducted by qualified Westminster Guides, David Harry and Frank Molloy, it will highlight some of the more contentious sculptures in the centre of the capital, including those of Winston Churchill, Lord Nelson, and the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

We will examine the meaning and validity of such memorials in public spaces, as well as discussing their artistic merit, often a subject for debate in itself. It also aims to show how controversy around memorials is not just a recent phenomenon.

In addition, the walk takes in some of the capital’s most historic buildings such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey.
