WALK | The East End: From Wapping to Whitechapel

**This event is now Sold Out. A waiting list is in operation so please do register and we will contact you should a space become available.**

Discover the fascinating history and the people who came to London’s East End – from Whitechapel to Wapping.

Our expert guide is Martin Scholar, Barratt London head of planning and graduate of Open City’s Golden Key Academy. He will explore the streets and byways from Whitechapel to Wapping, regaling us with stories of trade and immigration in the East End.

Drawn to the London docks for work, Martin will tell the tales of the communities who shaped the area: Irish, Indian, Jewish, and German. Our guide will also talk about pioneering philanthropic work, social housing, entertainment, racial discrimination and prejudice, religion, food and drink, welfare, trade and employment.

The tour begins in Whitechapel, one of the poorest slums in Victorian London, through to Aldgate and Shadwell, wending its way to Wapping with its stunning river views. Location highlights include Wilton’s Music Hall, London’s oldest Indian restaurant, Hawksmoor’s St George in the East church, Tobacco Dock, the old docks and warehouses, Toynbee Hall, Whitechapel Art Gallery and Library; the Proof House and the Leman Street Dispensary.

The Cable Street Mural commemorates the Battle of Cable Street in 1936, between the British Union of Fascists led by Oswald Mosley. Fighting against him were anti-fascist protesters, including local Jewish, socialist, anarchist, Irish and communist groups.
