WALK | The Illuminated River

**This event is now Sold Out. A waiting list is in operation, please feel free to register and we will contact you should a space become available.

Join the Former Director of the Illuminated River Foundation, Sarah Gaventa, on this gentle, evening walk alongside the river Thames to find out more about the world’s longest public artwork.

At 3.2 miles in length, Illuminated River has transformed the Thames at night with an orchestrated series of light works across nine bridges in central London – from London to Lambeth Bridge.

Its subtly moving sequences of LED light symbolically unify the Thames bridges, drawing inspiration from the spirit and history of the river and from the architecture and engineering heritage of its bridges. Designed by New York-based artist Leo Villareal, working with British architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, the artwork respects the natural environment and local inhabitants, creating a sensitive and site-specific interplay with the river. The installation was completed in April 2021 and will be in place for at least ten years.

Sarah Gaventa is Creative Director of the Earls Court Development and the Former Director of the Illuminated River Foundation. An Hon. Fellow of RIBA and the Landscape Institute, Sarah is a public space and public art expert and curator and was previously Director of CABE Space at the Commission for Architecture and Built Environment.
