Join this on-line ‘in-conversation’ event with Stephen Bayley and Roger Mavity, the authors of TERENCE, as well as Tim Bowder Ridger, Principal at Conran and Partners. Chaired by Society Chair, Leanne Tritton.
Terence was not so much an artisan-designer as a print media “influencer” of quite extraordinary range and scope. We can debate forever whether he was a cause or a symptom in the revolution of consumer behaviour in the late twentieth century, but what’s certain is that he was central to the public’s perception of it.
In restaurants and shops, with unique genius, he presented new vistas to explore. His achievement was not designing new chairs, but entire expectations about living and eating. Very cleverly, he assembled furniture and food he enjoyed, monetizing his own taste and selling it to us as “design”.
From London’s first bistro in the fifties, through Habitat in the sixties (which brought the Bauhaus to Bromley and elsewhere) onto the The Design Museum and restaurant cults of the eighties and nineties, very few people have made a more energetic and beneficial contribution to material life in London.
About Stephen Bayley:
Stephen Bayley was the person for whom the term “design guru” was coined, something he accepts with what he likes to think of as self-deprecating irony. In the forty years since Terence Conran plucked him from the obscurity of provincial academe, Stephen’s books, articles and exhibitions have changed the way people think of “design”. With Terence, he created The Design Museum and is Chairman of The Royal Fine Art Commission Trust and Visiting Honorary Professor at Liverpool University School of Architecture.
About Roger Mavity
Roger’s first career was in advertising: he started his own business, ran it for ten years, and sold it. He then became a corporate CEO, heading Granada Group’s Technology and Leisure Divisions; moved to PR as Chairman of Citigate; became CEO of Terence Conran’s businesses for seven years; before becoming an art photographer and writer.
He says that he has not yet decided what he wants to do when he grows up.
About Tim Bowder-Ridger
Architect and designer Tim Bowder-Ridger, joined Conran and Partners in 1997. Since 2010 Tim has led the design and business direction of the practice as its Principal.
After many years of working together, Terence and Tim shared a passion for creating authentic experiences centred around cultural spirit and personality. They also shared a particular interest in reviving and reusing undervalued buildings in London, such as Centre Point Tower.
Conran and Partners, under Tim’s leadership, endeavours to keep Terence’s ethos relevant for the future.
