WEBINAR | London of the Future

**Bookings have now closed for this event**

What challenges did London face 100 years ago, and what solutions were offered? And how different (or similar) were these to the ones that we face today?

In 1921 The London Society published ‘London of the Future’, a collection of essays looking at some of the issues the capital faced and suggesting how these might be addressed.

We can read about the problems of pollution, of roads and traffic, of housing and of rail. There are calls to link the city’s green spaces with boulevards and to remove all railings around parks. The book anticipates the Channel Tunnel and the importance of aviation, advocates for more coordinated railways and for cleaner air, proposes new bridges across the Thames as well as a more powerful London executive.

In this talk, architect and historian Mark Prizeman and Society Chair, Leanne Tritton look at the essays in the book and what it tells us about the mindset of those concerned with  the development of the capital and the quality of life of its inhabitants.

We’ll see what has changed – and what echoes today – in the concerns and the solutions. And we will recognise the achievement of the founders of The London Society in thinking about London as a whole rather than the fragmented plans that had gone before.

Never was ‘valuing the past, looking to the future’ more appropriate!
