Rebuilding London: the January Letter from the Director
22 Jan 2025
Welcome to 2025! I am very excited about the new year and the Society has lots of plans in the making. The word on the street is that there are a lot of existing buildings which have been given a new lease of life thanks to some sensitive adaptation and remodeling. This will be a real focus for the upcoming tours and events as we look at what the capital can do to improve itself. This is good for the environment, as new buildings take a lot of carbon to build and there is often some demolition involved in preparing the way for construction. One such example of this is the fantastic YY London building in Canary Wharf by BGY. We quickly sold out the tickets for our visit at the end of January but we are hopefully arranging a second trip, so join the waiting list if you don’t want to miss out.
Meanwhile, we have some lovely tours with tickets still available. Our Saturday residency at the London Centre kicks off with a walking tour of Sculpture in the City and the brand new art installations that have appeared on the streets and public spaces within the Square Mile. We are very grateful to LACUNA for providing us with this special access to their creative programme.
We have also brought back our popular trip to see the Hindu ‘Neasden Temple’. It is a masterpiece of exquisite Indian design and workmanship in the heart of London. This trip is exclusively available to members at the moment but we will open it up to a wider audience if it doesn’t fill up. I do expect that it will sell out, so you might want to reconsider becoming a member if you aren’t already one.
Please keep an eye out for further updates as there are lots of events that are about to be finalised and I’m very excited for you to see what they are. If there is anything you want to see more of at the Society or you have an idea for a visit, then please click here to fill out our short survey.
