Why Young Londoners Need a Stronger Voice in Shaping the City

Whether it’s the cost of renting a flat, the reliability of your commute, the future of your local high street, or access to culture, green space and opportunity, decisions made today will shape how young Londoners experience the city for years to come.

Yet too often, younger voices are underrepresented in the conversations that influence London’s future.

At The London Society, we believe London works best when more people can take part in shaping it. As an independent civic society and charity, our role is to help Londoners understand how the city works and create spaces where different perspectives can be heard, challenged and explored.

That is why we are launching a new Young Londoners Advisory Group.

Why now?

London is a city of extraordinary opportunity, but it is also a city facing significant challenges.

Housing affordability continues to affect where people can live and how they plan their futures. Transport influences access to jobs, education and social opportunities. Questions around sustainability, culture, public space and economic opportunity will shape the city for decades to come.

These are not abstract policy issues. They are everyday realities.

Through our talks, tours, debates, podcasts and campaigns, The London Society explores the decisions shaping London’s future. We want younger Londoners to play a more active role in those conversations and help ensure our programme reflects the experiences, concerns and ambitions of the next generation.

What is the Young Londoners Advisory Group?

The group will act as a sounding board, idea generator and source of insight for The London Society.

Members will help us identify topics that matter to younger Londoners, suggest ideas for events and campaigns, and contribute fresh perspectives to our work.

This is not a formal governance role. It is an opportunity to participate, contribute and help shape activity across the Society.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people with different backgrounds, experiences and interests. Whether you work in the built environment, study in London, run a business, work in the arts, public sector or charity sector, or simply care about the future of the city, we would love to hear from you.

What will be involved?

The commitment is intentionally light, but meaningful.

Members of the Young Londoners Advisory Group will:

  • Attend quarterly meetings with The London Society team and trustees
  • Suggest ideas for events, discussions, campaigns and content
  • Help us understand issues affecting younger Londoners
  • Support the development of activities that are relevant, inclusive and engaging
  • Act as ambassadors for civic participation and constructive debate

There may also be opportunities to support specific projects, events or initiatives throughout the year.

Who can apply?

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Aged 30 or under
  • Interested in London and its future
  • Curious, thoughtful and willing to contribute ideas
  • Keen to help make The London Society’s work relevant to younger audiences

You do not need professional expertise or previous committee experience.

We are interested in perspectives, lived experience and enthusiasm as much as professional knowledge.

How to apply

If you would like to be considered for the Young Londoners Advisory Group, please email info@londonsociety.org.uk with:

  • A short introduction about yourself
  • A few sentences explaining why you would like to be involved

London’s future should not be shaped solely by experts, institutions or established voices. It should also be shaped by the people who will live with the consequences of today’s decisions for decades to come.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

Not yet a member? Membership of The London Society is free for under-30s for two years, giving you access to talks, tours, debates, visits and opportunities to meet people who care about London’s future. If you’re interested in joining the Young Londoners Advisory Group, becoming a member is a great place to start. If you’re over 30, we’d be grateful if you shared this opportunity with younger friends, colleagues and contacts who might like to get involved.
