TOUR | Springfield Village: London’s Newest Park and the Future of Wellbeing

What does good regeneration look like? Join the tour of the new Springfield Village and Park in Tooting

Housing and health. Two of the most important issues facing Londoner’s today.

As the @Mayor of London and his team look for solutions to deliver quality housing that will make Londoner’s lives better, we are delighted to offer this very special tour of one of London’s best in class regeneration schemes, Springfield Village. You will also be one of the first people to see London’s largest new public park.

The tour will be led by Richard Coe, Project Director at Kajima Partnerships

and Harriet’s Gladwell-Phillips, Project Manager at Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures. Both are highly experienced regeneration professionals who will help you understand the genesis for this project and how, working with the NHS, healthcare is acting as the catalyst for wider regeneration?

Once home to a mental health hospital dating back to the Victorian-era, Springfield Village in Tooting offers a unique opportunity to explore these questions in practice.

The site has been transformed through a partnership between the NHS, Kajima, and Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures Ltd, and is now home to two new NHS mental health facilities, over 800 new homes and 32 acres of public parkland.

The new mental health facilities were designed following over 400 consultations with clinicians, patients and local residents. In contrast to traditional institutional settings, Springfield offers a therapeutic environment that breaks down previous stigma around mental health care, by integrating new and improved facilities within community regeneration and significant urban greening.

Opening to the public in July, the new 32-acre park is the London’s newest major green space and the largest to open since Olympic Park opened in 2012. The park includes sensory gardens, a café, play areas and a youth shelter co-designed with students from St John Bosco College.

Springfield Village is also a residential and civic development. It includes 839 new homes, retail spaces, and land allocated for a future school. The architectural approach blends restored Grade II listed buildings from the original 1840 hospital with sustainable new builds, creating a cohesive and respectful urban fabric.

This tour will explore Springfield Village as a blueprint for how healthcare, housing and public space can coexist, and how our cities’ design can help to shape not just treatment, but the experience of living well.
